BORA represents a new direction for spiced rum. We have worked hard to offer a spirt that is as simultaneously familiar as it is exotic.
We imagined what a rum from the Caribbean – the traditional home of this spirit - would be like if it was spiced with flavours more at home in the British countryside.
BORA Botanical Rum
Our Vision
BORA represents a new direction for spiced rum. We have worked hard to offer a spirt that is as simultaneously familiar as it is exotic. Adding a Cornish botanical twist, BORA is a modern reinterpretation of a traditional Caribbean spiced rum and it is a true embodiment of Caribbean Spirit, Cornish Spice.
We set ourselves a challenge when creating BORA. We wanted to strip back the accumulated wisdom and customs of the last few centuries and create a spiced rum like no other. Different in the way it’s made, mixed, and enjoyed. Above all it had to be a rum that looked to the local, and rewrote what it means to make a British spiced rum.
We imagined what a rum from the Caribbean – the traditional home of this spirit – would be like if it was spiced with flavours more at home in the British countryside; As if a barrel washed up on our local beach, Maenporth, and was found by some enterprising Cornish locals.
What Guided Us
To achieve our vision, we created a set of guiding principals that listed what we wanted, and what we didn’t want, from our rum.
BORA Botanial Rum is:
- A spiced rum that gets its spice from British botanicals
- Lighter, dryer, and, clearer than other spiced rums
- The perfect partner for light mixers, especially tonic
- Crafted sustainable, and a carbon negative product.
- A rum that uses techniques more closely associated with gin production
- Suitable for those with a gluten intolerance
BORA Botanical Rum isn’t:
- A traditional white or spiced run. In fact, it is not like any other rum on the market
- Made with any artificial flavours or sweeteners
- Designed around heavy, sweet mixers like cola and ginger beer.
- Coloured or synthetically aged
BORA’s History
BORA was initially inspired by the many and varied rums of Mauritius, that Pete first tasted on a celebratory trip upon leaving the Royal Navy. They were far removed from Pussers Rum synonymous with the naval celebration and tradition. The white rums, dryer than those from the Caribbean, were a revelation. All were packed with flavour, whilst being light, and uniquely flavoured.
As soon as Pete returned, in the summer of 2018, he founded Penryn Spirts with his friend Willoughby both shared a common vision of creating a rum unlike any other. One that captured the lightness of the rums from Mauritius, yet added a spice entirely different to the familiar. We wanted to distil the flavours from the British countryside into our rum, to only use botanicals which grow in the surrounding fields, and traditional orchards across the UK.
After two years of experimentation, tasting, and refinement BORA Botanical Rum was born. Using techniques more closely associated with gin production has allowed us to create an exceptionally smooth spirit, with the delicate flavours of both rum and botanicals in perfect harmony. Drawing inspiration from the ingredients around us we use a mix of plum and quince, as well as bay and nettle foraged from our smallholding.
Designed to be paired with lighter mixers and refined cocktails – BORA is at home in a rum and tonic as it is as replacement for gin in a martini.
